How to Extend a Patio Without Concrete- Steps

PlanningPlanning

The first step to constructing an entirely new patio or expanding the current concrete one within your home is to sketch an outline of the design you’re planning to do on paper. A well-planned plan will help you in making any additional expenditures and help you save money. You don’t require any concrete products to expand the patio’s area. There are many options to consider to make this project a huge success.

PaversPavers

Pavers are the stones that can be used to increase the length of the patio you have built. Make sure you purchase enough of them, so you don’t have to buy more during your project.

Map Out the Area

Mark out the space that your patio is going to be. Use strings or garden hoses to create the outline and stakes to correctly secure the hose or string. When laying your outline, you must consider that guard are used to holding the pavers and the base in place. Also, the base should extend over the guards to the size of the paver. Typically, this is 4″ to 6″.

Slope’s Natural Beauty

Maintaining a proper angle for your patio’s slope is crucial to the overall layout that the patio will have. If you don’t do this properly, it will cause drainage issues. Therefore, make sure you make the correct choices and ensure that your patio has a natural appearance. You can always ask an engineer or architect to assist if you find it difficult.

Excavate

Most of the time, excavating involves the removal of grass or sod. Sod removers or a cutter is rented to facilitate this process.

The amount of soil you take out will be contingent on the size of the pavers and whether the soil is damp. The base usually is five” plus 1.5″ for the sand layer and the height of pavers. The base layer must be as high as twelve” plus 1.5″ in extremely wet soils for the sand and the pavers’ height.

After this, the string can be placed from stakes on the patio in front and later adjusted to show the slope needed. Strings running across the entire length ensure that the pavers remain in a level position across the patio.

Fill the cracks in by adding more sand to the area until it is overflowing. It allows for sitting for a couple of days, absorbing the sand, and working through the cracks.

Base

The next step you must take care of is putting in your base materials. Be sure to ensure your base isn’t more than 3 inches deep!

Edges

Be sure to put restraints around the sides of the pavers. These restraints for pavers are made of wood the majority of the time. They must ensure your pavers remain in the correct place and not move too much!

SandSand

Apply an even layer of sand before installation. Sand will be the glue that holds everything else in the right place. Be sure the sand’s elevation is not more than two inches.

Tamp the sand

Once all the pavers have been laid, use the plate compactor to compact each paver. Complete the job by sweeping an even layer of sand through the joints between the pavers. It will hold the pavers to the ground. Sand may have to be swept through the joints several times since it settles after rain and use.
