The connection between two floors in a house is called a staircase. It can be straight or curved. Some of these are easier to climb, while others can be tiring.
Although there are guidelines regarding the design and minimum width of a staircase, it is generally recommended that staircases be wider than the minimum width. The minimum space required for a staircase should be 3 feet 6 inches in width. The minimum tread width should be 10 inches. No nosing is allowed. The standard height of the riser should not exceed 7 inches.
A staircase should not be low than 5 to 7 feet in width. The tread width shouldn’t exceed 1 foot. Commercial buildings should have a riser height no greater than six inches.
Safety is a key component of staircase safety. The ceiling height shows the height of the staircase. The treads and risers required for a higher ceiling will need to be larger. This page explains all the important measurements for staircases.
Staircase Design Terminology
There are many parts to a staircase: tread, riser, and landing; horizontal length, step length, flight length, and inclined length. We will discuss the different parts of a staircase definition.
Risers and Treads
The tread size is determined by the average adult foot. However, having your whole foot on the tread is not essential to allow you to walk up the stairs safely and comfortably.
The vertical section between each tread is called the riser. It may be missing from an open staircase. Riser height is measured from the bottom of each tread to the next upper tread.
How we descend the stairs affects the riser height, which is approximately 7 3/4 inches/ 19.7 cm. You could easily climb higher than seven 3/4ins / 19.7cm if facing backward. A ladder’s rungs are approximately 12ins/30cm apart. We face forward when we descend the stairs, which limits the size of the risers.
Stair Width Dimensions
The length of a staircase from one side to the other is called its stair width. International Residential Codes and other local building codes usually have a standard. This standard is typically 3 feet, 36 inches wide, or larger. It does not include handrails.
It is the best part. Depending on your home’s size, budget, and needs, you can make your stairs as wide or narrow as you like.
Staircase Height
The height of a staircase’s rise depends on its ceiling height and the depth of the upper-floor structure. To make the staircase work, you will need more treads and risers for a tall ceiling. Stairs can either be supported completely by walls, from the sides or underneath, or appear to stand in space with the help of steel structural elements.
Stringer
A stringer is a structural component that supports the treads or risers on a staircase. There are usually three stringers in a staircase—one on each side and one in the middle. While stringers may not be visible on all stairs, they can be easily seen on those with open sides. Stringers are cut to fit the step or left uncut to hide the edges.
Ceiling Height
These ceiling heights are ideal, but a ceiling close to the regular height would be more desirable. The staircase’s minimum width equals the minimum circulation area width of 3ft/ 0.91m.
Nosing
A protrusion at one’s tread’s edge that hangs above the riser below is called the nosing. Although not all steps have a nosing, it is included in the tread’s length. Nosing serves two purposes: to increase safety and provide extra space for people to place their feet.
The Common building codes suggest that the nosing should have a minimum length of 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) and a maximum length of 1.25 inches (3.12 cm).
Egress stairs
Egress stairs are those stairs you will see in emergency exits. These stairs must be constructed with non-combustible materials, from the handrails to the nosing. You must ensure that the stairway is wide enough to accommodate multiple people in an emergency. Safety and usability will be assured when people use the stairs.
The minimum width for an egress staircase where less than 50 people can move should be 36 inches (or 91.44cms). Where more than 50 or less than 200 people will be traversing the stairs, it must be 44 inches or 111.7 cm.
Headroom stair
Headroom is the distance between the tread’s top and the ceiling. Although building codes that require headroom are intended to provide enough space for people to use stairs comfortably, they often require more than the average person’s height to permit larger items to be moved.

straight stairs
Straight stairs are stairs that have no changes in direction. Straight stairs are a very common type of stair found in commercial and residential properties. Here are some examples of straight floating stairs with various stringer styles, railing, and wood species.
L shaped stairs
An L-shaped stair is a variant of a straight stair that has a bend in one section of the stair. The landing at the transition point is often used to create this bend. It is usually 90 degrees. However, it doesn’t have to be. It is often called a long L or quarter-turn staircase if the landing is closer than the top or bottom.
U Shaped Staircase
The U-shaped Staircase is a pair of parallel flights of stairs connected by a 180-degree turn landing. These stairs are also called the switchback stairs or the half-turn. U-shaped stairs are more easily integrated into an architectural plan. The flat landing provides resting points for ascending and is architecturally pleasing. These stairs are easy to integrate into a small area and require more construction than other designs. U-shaped staircases have some drawbacks. They are difficult to measure and construct and require additional support structures for landing.
Spiral staircases
A spiral staircase is also called a screw, helical, or corkscrew. It has an open stairwell (hollow model) where the treads turn around a central shaft or pillar, following a circular or polygonal pattern. Their diameter is usually between 150 and 160 centimeters. This type of staircase is often restricted to secondary uses or smaller interior spaces due to its relatively narrow tread width (60-70 centimeters). The space-saving benefits of this staircase come with major disadvantages. Because of its narrow width, it is difficult to move furniture, and the treads are more tapered, the chance of falling is greater.
Curved Staircase
Curved stairs are continuous and form a spiral arch, giving rise to an incredible architectural view. Although it has a greater radius, it does not form an entire circle. It is located at the entrance to your house to add elegance and style. If they are larger, they are easier to navigate. They are, however, the most difficult to build. It is a great achievement for any builder and fabricator. It is the most costly to build, and it stands out from all other types of staircases.
Cantilever Staircase
Cantilever Staircase’s stair treads appear floating in the air without any support. The treads are attached to one end by making divets. The other end is either secured with a railing system or floats. Depending on the owner’s preference, the stair stringer may be hidden or exposed. They add space and interest to any room. Some configurations are difficult to design, so you must check the local codes. The drawback of Cantilever Staircases is that the tread support must be designed to accommodate the weight of those using it. Due to the additional structural requirements, stairs can be more expensive than other designs.
Under staircase dimensions mistake
I have seen many staircases that are not designed correctly.
It is important to measure the height of the door and determine how many steps are required before the door can fit beneath. It would be a mistake; if the molding or stair skirt is around the door, it will overlap.
Consider the stair skirt and any door molding when placing a door under the stairs.
